We need to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. When we love one another, the world sees us as God’s disciples. Jesus had reason not to love humanity, but He loves us so much by dying on the Cross for us.
Most importantly, God is love, which means we must love one another. John 3:16 says that God sends His only son to die for us because he loves us so much. Remembering Jesus’ death on Calvary teaches us how to love one another like Him.
Forgiveness: The Pathway to Healing and Redemption
Forgiveness is an essential message in Jesus’ ministry. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus shows forgiveness in countless ways, from his encounters with sinners to his ultimate death on the Cross. He publicly paid our debt in full for all of our sins.
In Matthew 6:14-15, Christ tells his disciples, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But, if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” These statements highlight the power of transformation of forgiveness for spiritual and emotional healing.
Why is it so difficult for us as fellow believers to forgive others? If God has forgiven us, we need to ask God to help us to forgive others. Matthew 18:22 reminds us that Jesus says we must forgive our brother seventy-seven times. This means we must continue forgiving indefinitely despite being hurt, betrayed, and the like.
In life, we will find individuals who hurt us in one way or another. However, Jesus taught us to forgive others. It is hard to forgive as human beings, but if we ask the Lord to help us, He will.
For instance, when I read the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. His brothers sold him, but he didn’t hold grudges against them. He told them that they intended to hurt him, but God placed him in a position to become a leader and do good by assisting people in need (Genesis 50:20). Joseph saw the goodness of God in their evil intent.
Furthermore, Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness urge us to overcome resentment and bitterness. They guide us towards inner peace and reconciliation. Remember that we can come to Jesus to help us let go of resentment and anger. With God’s strength, we can learn to forgive.
Service: Following the Example of Christ’s Humility
Jesus’ life shows a great desire for service and humility. In the Gospel of Mark 10:45, he states, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
This statement expresses Jesus’ mission to give up everything for others and be unselfish and humble.
We follow in Jesus’ footsteps by doing acts of service that show compassion and support those in need while encouraging unity and community. Jesus taught us to serve others with love and compassion. An act of service doesn’t have to be a big thing. We need to find people in need and show them the love of Jesus by serving them. When you serve, it is about showing love and advancing the Kingdom of God.
An act of service can be as small as listening to someone or spending time with someone in the nursing home. In addition, Mark 10:43 reminds us that “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
Another great act of service from Jesus was humbling himself by washing the disciples’ feet (Luke 13:5). This act of service taught us to follow in his footsteps. It showed us that even in the most undesirable way, Jesus called us to serve others. Ask God to show you how to serve others with humility.
We need to be willing to serve those around us and bless them. Every time we serve someone, we become like Jesus.
Practical Application: Living Out Jesus’ Teachings in Everyday Life
While Jesus’ teachings provide eternal knowledge, the true value is found in the practical application. This is in our daily lives. We respect Christ’s legacy by practicing love, forgiveness, and service in our relationships and attitudes. This also cultivates personal and spiritual growth.
Here are some practical methods to follow Jesus’ teachings:
1. Practice Compassionate Listening: Take the time to listen to others with empathy and understanding fully. Try to connect more profoundly without judging.
2. Cultivate a Forgiving Heart: Release resentment and anger through prayer and thought. Extend forgiveness to those who have done wrong to you.
3. Engage in Acts of Service: Look for ways to help people in your community. This can be through volunteering, mentoring, or simply lending a hand.
4. Develop a Spirit of thankfulness: Practice thankfulness for the blessings in your life. Express appreciation for the people and things that improve your journey.
5. Seek Reconciliation: Take proactive steps to reconcile with those you may have hurt or offended. We need to show initiative to apologize and ask for forgiveness as necessary.
