Can I be honest with you for a moment?
There are seasons when life gets so loud — so full of noise, demands, notifications, and deadlines — that even the most faithful woman finds herself wondering: Is God still speaking? Because I can’t hear Him anymore.
Maybe that is exactly where you are right now. The house is never quiet. Your phone never stops. Your mind races the moment your head hits the pillow. And somewhere in all that noise, the still small voice of God feels impossibly far away.
Friend, God has not gone silent. He is still speaking. The question is not whether He is talking — it is whether we have learned how to listen.
Here are 5 practical, Scripture-backed ways on how to hear God’s voice when life gets loud. Because you were never meant to navigate this life alone — and God has too much to say to you to let the world drown Him out.
“After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” — 1 Kings 19:12
1. Understand How to Hear God’s Voice
Maybe you have been waiting for a thunderclap from heaven or a burning bush. Friend, most of the time God speaks far more quietly than that — and you may have been hearing Him all along without realizing it.
Here is how God speaks:
- His Word — the Bible is God’s primary language. When you read Scripture and a verse seems to leap off the page and land in your chest, that is God speaking.
- The Holy Spirit — a gentle inner nudge, a persistent thought, a sudden peace or unease about a decision
- Prayer — not just talking to God but sitting in silence long enough to sense His response
- Wise counsel — godly mentors, pastors, and trusted sisters in Christ who speak truth into your life
- Circumstances — open and closed doors, divine appointments, and moments that are too specific to be a coincidence
The more familiar you become with His Word, the more easily you will recognize His voice. A sheep knows its shepherd’s voice — and the more time you spend with God, the more unmistakable He becomes.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
2. Create Space for Silence — Every Single Day
Knowing how God speaks is only half the equation. The other half is creating space to actually hear Him.
Here is the hard truth: most of us are not struggling to hear God because He is silent. We are struggling because we are never silent.
We wake up and reach for our phones. We drive with the radio on. We fall asleep to the television. And then we wonder why we cannot hear the God who speaks in a whisper.
If you want to hear God’s voice, you have to create space for silence — intentionally. It does not have to be complicated or lengthy. Even ten minutes of quiet every morning can completely transform your ability to hear from God.
Here is a simple practice to try this week:
- Wake up 10–15 minutes earlier than usual
- Put your phone in another room or turn it face down
- Sit in a quiet place with your Bible and a journal
- Open with a simple prayer: “Lord, I am here. I am listening. Speak to me.”
- Read one passage of Scripture slowly — not to finish a reading plan, but to listen
- Sit in silence for 3–5 minutes and write down whatever comes to your heart
You will be amazed at what God says to a woman who finally gets still enough to listen.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
He is not asking you to have it all together. He is just asking you to be still.

3. Saturate Yourself in the Word of God
I have learned over decades of walking with God that the women who hear His voice most clearly are not the ones who pray the longest or fast the most — they are the ones who know His Word the deepest.
When you know Scripture, God can bring it to your remembrance at precisely the moment you need it most. A verse you memorized years ago suddenly surfaces in the middle of a crisis. A passage you read last week answers the question you have been carrying all month. That is the Holy Spirit at work — and He works through the Word you have planted in your heart.
I remember a season when I was going through one of the hardest trials of my life — my body was failing, my heart was heavy, and I could not feel God anywhere. But in the middle of that storm, a Scripture I had memorized years before rose up inside me like a lifeline: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
I had not gone looking for it. God brought it to me. If you are in a hard season right now, this post on praising God in every circumstance will meet you right where you are.
Make reading your Bible less about checking a box and more about having a conversation. Ask God before you open it: “What do You want to say to me today?” If you are looking for a simple way to start, my Bible Study Journal was created to help you do exactly that — write down what God is saying to you, one page at a time.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Then read with expectation. He will answer.
4. Learn to Recognize the Enemy’s Voice — and Reject It
One of the reasons so many women struggle to hear God is that they have not learned to distinguish His voice from the enemy’s. And the enemy is loud, persistent, and deceptive.
Here is a simple test to discern which voice you are hearing. You do not need a theology degree for this — just an honest, prayerful heart.
- God’s voice brings peace — even when the message is hard, there is an underlying sense of rightness and calm
- God’s voice aligns with Scripture — He will never tell you something that contradicts His Word
- God’s voice builds you up — even His correction comes with love, hope, and a way forward
- God’s voice is patient — He does not pressure you or create panic
- The enemy’s voice brings fear, confusion, shame, and urgency
- The enemy condemns — he reminds you of your worst moments with no offer of grace
- The enemy rushes you — he wants you to act before you have prayed
When a thought or impression comes to you, hold it up against these markers. If it does not line up with who God says He is and who God says you are — reject it. You have the authority in Christ.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
5. Obey the Last Thing He Told You
This is the one that stops most of us in our tracks.
Many women ask God to speak — but they are still sitting on the last thing He already said. And here is something I have learned the hard way: God rarely gives us the next instruction before we have obeyed the last one.
Maybe there is something God has already spoken to you that you have been putting off. A conversation you need to have. A habit you need to break. A person you need to forgive. And if God has been nudging you to pray more intentionally for your family, this guide was written for you. Sister, that is not failure — that is just your next step.

Obedience opens our ears. Even an unintentional delay creates static on the line between God and us — and friend, that is not condemnation, that is just how growth works. He cannot take you to the next chapter until you live out the one you are already on.
Start with what you already know He has said. Take that step. Watch how quickly the static clears, and His voice becomes unmistakable again.
“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” — John 14:21
That last phrase — ‘show myself to them’ — is the promise. Obedience does not just open your ears. It opens your eyes to see God moving in your life in ways you would have missed.
God Is Still Speaking — Are You Listening?
Sister, learning how to hear God’s voice in the middle of a noisy world is one of the most important things you will ever do. The demands on your time and attention are relentless — but God’s voice is stronger than all of it, and He is not finished speaking to you.
He has a word for your marriage. For your children. For your health. For your calling. For the dream you buried because life got too hard. He has not forgotten any of it, and He is waiting for the moment you get still enough to hear what He has been trying to say.
Start with just ten minutes tomorrow morning. Put the phone down. Open your Bible. Get quiet. And pray the simplest prayer a woman of faith can pray:
Lord, I am here. I am ready. Speak — for Your servant is listening. — 1 Samuel 3:10
He will answer. He always does.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” — Jeremiah 33:3
Let’s Talk
What is one thing that makes it hardest for you to hear God’s voice right now? Drop it in the comments — let’s pray together as a community. You are not in this alone. And if you are in a season where God feels distant, this post on waiting in faith will encourage your heart.
If this post encouraged you, share it with a sister who needs this reminder today. You never know whose life you might change with one simple share.
